How To Know The Quality Solar Lights

When it comes to choosing solar lights, there are some basic characteristics that should be taken into consideration:

First look at the number of diodes in a lamp. If there are more than one diode in a bulb, that means that this light be brighter and usually live longer than the light with only one LED.

Second, take a look at a battery compartment. It may contain one or multiple batteries, and of course the more batteries the better.

Surely the light fixtures with multiple LEDs and multiple batteries are the most expensive. But it's hard to say that such expensive models are definitely the best purchase, because technology is advancing so fast that in a couple of years even the cheap lights will be more bright and long-lasting than the top ones now. So it is better to find the acceptable balance between the characteristics and the price of the solar LED light. Another smart decision will be shopping for solar lights at the end-of-season closeouts, as you can get really big discounts.

So, how can we tell the difference between the high-quality solar LED lights and the bad ones? Here are some main features to consider before making a purchase:

  • The build quality. The high-quality light fixtures are usually assembled using tough screw fittings. Some might have soldered, welded or riveted parts. On the other hand, low-quality products are usually assembled using press-fit or twist-lock technology which is not so durable and can make a clicking sound or even break over time, especially when it's too cold or hot outside.

  • The battery quality. There are several types of batteries used in solar light fixtures that differ in make materials and thus in characteristics. The most popular and cheap option is lead acid batteries. They have poor capacity and last for a very limited time. We recommend to avoid this type of battery, however if you really like the fixture, you can change the battery after the purchase for something more qualitative (of course you'll have to buy the new batteries separately). The best choice is nickel metal hydride (NiMH) and nickel cadmium (NiCd) batteries. We recommend NiMH batteries as they are less toxic and a bit more effective and long-lasting than NiCd variants.

  • Availability of a wiring system. The high-quality fixtures are equipped with easy-to-install wiring systems to easily connect several lights together and plug them in a central photovoltaic solar panel.
  • The quality of ground fixtures. The good installation into the ground may have a huge impact on the solar lighting effectiveness and lifespan, especially if you are planning to get tall fixtures or use the lights in loose earth. Pay attention to the workmanship and the materials the spikes are made from, remember that this will determine how long your lights will serve you.

Take into consideration that the highest price doesn't always mean the best quality. Carefully examine all the features described in this article before purchasing the solar light fixture.
